T. H. SHEVCHENKO KHARKIV ACADEMIC UKRAINIAN DRAMA THEATRE

The Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theatre, also known as the Taras Shevchenko Kharkiv Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre, is a national theater founded in 1935 out of remnants of the suppressed «Berezil» Theater, which was founded by Les Kurbas in 1922. Les Kurbas was an actor, director and national artist of Ukraine. Along with Marian Krushelnytskyi and Leonid Bykov they were the most famous stars of this theatre. In their honor, there are memorial plaques installed on the facade of the theater, and in front of its entrance there is a sign buried in the cobblestone with the name «literaturna stometrivka» – memorial sign, dedicated to Kharkiv in the beginning of XX century. As a theater served as a place for meetings with readers of Pavlo Tychyna, Sergey Yesenin, Volodymyr Sosiura, Oleksii Tolstoi, Volodymyr Maiakovskyi and others, there were literary associations «Plug» and «Vaplite» based in it.
