The majority of researchers call Merefa village in Slobozhanskyi region to be the birthplace of Ivan Sirko. I. Sirko with his family lived in his house in Merefa for a long time. Another name of Merefa, recorded by some Ukrainian chronicles, that is Sirkivka, certifies that Merefa is associated with the name of the Cossack otaman.
