The opera «Othello»

On Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at 18.30 on the Grand Stage of the Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after M. V. Lysenko see the opera «Othello».

The repertoire of our theatre of the several last decades included two productions of this opera (1998 and 2013), however, the authors of the new version – Armen Kaloian (Director), Dmytro Morozov (Conductor-Director), Nadiia Shvets (Stage Designer-Director) present to the audience a new interpretation of the canonical story of love, cunningness and betrayal. Thus, for the first time on the Kharkiv theatre stage, the opera is presented in its full version, without abridgements.

“There is not a single excess note in our performance!” – the authors imply, and this quote can hardly be argued. 

“Othello” is considered worldwide the culmination of the artistic career of the great Verdi. The composer, who stopped creating new compositions at the height of his fame (being the author of worldwide-recognized masterpieces, he did not create a single new line for 10 long years), creates his composition based on the plot of the tragedy of the great William Shakespeare, and the opera is in no aspect inferior compared to the literature source in terms of deepness of the depiction of characters and dramatic conflicts. Surprises await the audience in the artistic design of the performance as well: alongside with the traditional decorations, the modern video contest will be used in the performance. Parts of the main characters – proud, but credulous Othello, cunning Iago, noble Cassio - are performed by the leading soloists of the theatre.
